Durango Equine Veterinary Clinic

Deworming Information

 Foals-yearlings:

  • Deworm mare 1-2 days after foaling with ivermectin, moxidectin or oxibendazole
  • Deworm foal at 6 weeks of age for ascarids
  • Deworm every 6 weeks for ascarids in the first year of life

Adults:

  • Perform a Fecal Egg Count (FEC) 2-4 months after the last deworming  (should be done 2-4 weeks after the Egg  Reappearance Period (ERP) of the last dewormer)

Product

  • Deworming strategies should be based on the number of Eggs Per Gram (EPG)  of fecal material
  • EPG Counts and what they mean
    • Low Shedders <200 EPG
      • Check fecal every 6 months
      • Deworm every 6 months (Spring and Fall)
  • Moderate Shedders 200-500 EPG
    • Check fecal every 6 months (more if indicated)
    • Deworm 3-4 times a year
    • Recheck at 1-2 years to determine if it is still a moderate shedder
  • High Shedders >500 EPG
    • Check fecal every 3-6 months
    • Deworm 5-6 times a year
    • To determine efficacy of the dewormer, a fecal exam should be repeated10-14 days post deworming in order to perform a Fecal Egg Count Reduction Test (which will indicate whether there is parasite resistance to specific dewormers)
      • Panacur should have a 90% kill rate to be considered effective
      • All other classes should have a 98% or better kill rate
      • Anything less and the dewormer  has resistance to it
      • Continue FEC on horses placed on a daily dewormer 2 x a year to determine supplemental treatments
