Equine Vaccination Recommendations

Foal Vaccinations:

  • Foal should be vaccinated at 5 months old
    • West Nile Virus
    • 5 way – Eastern/Western Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, Rhino, Flu
    • Strangles
    • Foal should be vaccinated at 6 months old
      • 5 way – Eastern/Western Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, Rhino, Flu
      • Rabies
      • Strangles
      • West Nile Virus
      • All foals  should be vaccinated at 10 months old and 11 months old for Influenza
      • After initial vaccines, babies can be vaccinated on the same schedule as adult horses
      • Strangles is recommended until 4 years of age

 Adult Horses:

  • If vaccination record is known and current:
    • Spring Shots
      • 5 way – Eastern/Western Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, Rhino, Flu
      • West Nile Virus
      • Rabies
  • Fall Shots
    • Flu/Rhino
    • Strep (with high risk horses or environments)
    • If vaccination record is not known, treat the horse as if it has never been vaccinated.
      • 5 way – Eastern/Western Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, Rhino, Flu with booster shot one month later
      • West Nile Virus with a booster shot one month later
      • Recommend Rabies

 Pregnant Mares:

  • After 45 days of pregnancy she can be vaccinated for:
    • 5 way – Eastern/Western Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, Rhino, Flu
    • West Nile Virus
    • Rabies
    • At 5, 7, and 9 months she can be vaccinated for :
      • Pregnant Mare Rhino – Pnuemobort  K
      • At 9-10 months she should be vaccinated again for:
        • 5 way – Eastern/Western Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, Rhino, Flu
        • West Nile Virus
        • Rabies
